KURE BEACH, NC (WWAY) -- The Cape Fear Crop Mob is part of a nationwide initiative that began in the North Carolina Triangle.

The volunteer group usually lends a hand to local farmers, but today they dug into one woman's backyard tomato garden.

Sarah Daughtridge is famous for her heirloom tomatoes and peppers. But after facing a string of health setbacks, she says she was overwhelmed and unable to keep up her plants this year.

So she sent out a call for help, and the Crop Mob answered.

They cleaned up her garden and sifted through her soil removing weeds that had begun overtaking the planters.

She says the crop mob definitely surpassed her expectations, "These folks were actually able to lend a hand back and that meant an awful lot to me," Daughtridge said, "I almost cried."

A lot of what she grows as seedlings gets donated and that's why the Crop Mob says they were interested in helping out.

Co-founder of the Cape Fear chapter Brittany Taggart says, "We're helping her get back on top of it so that in turn she can start giving back to the community again."

No money is exchanged in Crop Mob projects, the only thing the farmer has to do is provide lunch.
